Vitamins, Minerals, Radioactive Metals and the Indian Mustard Plant

The Indian mustard plant for Vibrant HealthStrange Connection

It turns out that nuclear waste heavy metals and good nutrition have something in common, the Indian mustard plant.

When the Russians were looking for a way to remediate all the radioactive material spread by the meltdown of the nuclear power facility in Chernobyl they tried phytoremediation.

Phytoremediation is the direct use of living plants for in situ removal, containment, degradation, or rendering harmless contaminants in soil.  Plants do this by taking up the materials in the soil by absorbing them through the root system.

The plant which Russian agronomists used was the Indian mustard plant (Brassica juncea) which has a prodigious absorption capacity.  The Indian mustard plant has been nicknamed “nature’s magnet” and has a unique ability to absorb metals and minerals from the soil it grows in.

Whereas the Russians used it to remove dangerous levels of lead and uranium, scientists are now using the Indian mustard plant to help boost our intake of metals and minerals often lacking in our Western diet.  Continue reading Vitamins, Minerals, Radioactive Metals and the Indian Mustard Plant

FDA Warns Dietary Supplement Marketers About Deceptive Claims

FDA inspector with dietary supplementsThe FDA has issued another warning critical of dietary supplements.  To many people who believe in the value of dietary supplements this was just another example of how the U.S. Food and Drug Administration caters to big pharmaceutical interests and discredits the value of dietary supplements.

However, there is some justification for legitimate concern about “bad actors” in the dietary supplement industry.  These are the companies which make deceptive claims, have no scientific evidence or clinical studies verifying the efficacy or safety of their products, intentionally mislabel their products and don’t provide complete ingredient information.

These unscrupulous manufacturers seem to be focusing on three main health and lifestyle issues: weight loss, sexual performance and body building.

The real issue is how to ensure continued access to legitimate and beneficial nutritional supplements while reining in companies that are giving a black eye to all dietary supplement manufacturers, products, and representatives and may threaten the health of consumers.  Continue reading FDA Warns Dietary Supplement Marketers About Deceptive Claims

Danger! Smelly Cars Can Be Hazardous To Your Health.

Does your car have a certain air about it?  Ours did.

Two years ago, in the middle of a hot summer, we noticed a bad smell in our Jeep.  After cleaning out the car and checking the front grill and the undercarriage for road kill, I still couldn’t find the source of the odor.

The smell got worse as the days went by, and we had to drive with the windows down wherever we went.  We absolutely wouldn’t allow any of our friends to ride with us.

I finally found the source of the stink, a half-full plastic milk bottle from a McDonald’s Happy Meal wedged under the front seat.

Some odors in our cars, like this one, are merely unpleasant and troublesome.  Other odors may be hazardous to our health.

In the simply unpleasant category go smells from leftover fast food meals, from Rover, from the exercise clothes and towels in the gym bag in the back seat, from body odor, and from crud tracked in on our shoes, all more hazardous to our reputation and driving pleasure than to our health.  Continue reading Danger! Sweating Makes Her Feel Sexy Says Kim Kardashian

Socialite in vibrant healthSocialite Kim Kardashian says sweating makes her feel sexy.

I don’t know about you, but sweating usually makes me feel irritable and exhausted.  Sweating keeps my clothes washer going busy because I don’t like wearing wet odorous clothes.  Sweat doesn’t do to much for the look of my dress clothes either.

However, the experts say that sweating is actually beneficial.  Those 2.6 million sweat glands in the average person’s skin actually help us stay healthy.

Sweat helps regulate body temperature.  Sweating is the way our body responds to an increase in core temperature and it’s essential if our body is to cool down.  We stop sweating when our body’s core temperature drops down to normal.  If we didn’t sweat we would be in danger of heat stroke.

In addition to cooling us off, sweating has other health benefits.

Sweating can increase our metabolic rate, When our metabolism increases, our body’s ability to eliminate harmful toxins increases.  Our bodies are filled with toxins that we pick up every day from our environment; from the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe.  These toxins can cause significant health problems.  Although our body can eliminate some of these toxins by other methods, up to 30% of them can be effectively eliminated by sweat.  Sweat is one of the best toxic flushes available!

So it’s probable that individuals who periodically use saunas and steam rooms are getting important health benefits from doing so.  Continue reading Sweating Makes Her Feel Sexy Says Kim Kardashian

Household Cleaners Linked To Breast Cancer In Women

Household cleaners linked to breast cancer in womenA study recently published in the magazine “Environmental Health” found a greater incidence of breast cancer among women who frequently used household cleaners.  Julia Brody, PhD, executive director of the Silent Spring Institute in Newton, Mass., who led the study, and her fellow researchers conducted telephone interviews with 787 women who had been diagnosed with breast cancer and 721 women who did not have breast cancer.  The women were asked about the frequency of their use of household cleaners.

The links between breast cancer and household cleaners was found to be the greatest among women who used combined cleaning products (many different products used together).  The risk of breast cancer was about twice as high for the women who used many different products compared to women who said they used the least.

“The use of air fresheners and products for mold and mildew control were associated with increased risk” according to Dr. Brody.

Several household products contain synthetic chemical ingredients linked to cancer or other health problems.  You can find a list of hazardous ingredients in household products here .

Indoor air pollution is one of the nation’s most pressing personal health concerns according to the EPA.  They found peak concentrations of 20 toxic compounds to be 200 – 500 times higher inside some houses than outside according to a study that tested 600 homes in 6 cities.  Some of these compounds can be found in household cleaning products.

What are some of the symptoms caused by chemicals in household products?  Indications include runny nose, skin rash, a scratchy throat, respiratory infections, itchy eyes, dizziness, fatigue, and headaches.  Continue reading Household Cleaners Linked To Breast Cancer In Women

Cancer Panel Fingers Toxic Chemicals

householdchemsThis post on the link between toxic chemicals and cancer from 2010 has been updated on 9/19/2016 to include a link at the bottom to the most recent report from The President’s Cancer Panel.

In a report from the mainstream of scientific and medical thinking, the President’s Cancer Panel released a report in May, 2010 declaring that chemicals threaten our health.  This validates the concerns that many people have had about the effects of toxins on our health.

The panel is not some environmental fringe group with an agenda.  Established in 1971, the panel reports directly to the president and is comprised of 3 distinguished experts who review America’s cancer program.

In their 200 page report, the Cancer Panel recommends a much more vigorous regulation of chemicals, concluding that chemicals can have a far-reaching impact on our health.

We are exposed to toxic chemicals in the air we breathe, in the water we drink, and in the food we eat.  The proliferation of chemicals in water, air, foods, and household products is suspected as a factor in the increase in some cancers, particularly in children.  Continue reading Cancer Panel Fingers Toxic Chemicals
