FDA Warns Dietary Supplement Marketers About Deceptive Claims

FDA inspector with dietary supplementsThe FDA has issued another warning critical of dietary supplements.  To many people who believe in the value of dietary supplements this was just another example of how the U.S. Food and Drug Administration caters to big pharmaceutical interests and discredits the value of dietary supplements.

However, there is some justification for legitimate concern about “bad actors” in the dietary supplement industry.  These are the companies which make deceptive claims, have no scientific evidence or clinical studies verifying the efficacy or safety of their products, intentionally mislabel their products and don’t provide complete ingredient information.

These unscrupulous manufacturers seem to be focusing on three main health and lifestyle issues: weight loss, sexual performance and body building.

The real issue is how to ensure continued access to legitimate and beneficial nutritional supplements while reining in companies that are giving a black eye to all dietary supplement manufacturers, products, and representatives and may threaten the health of consumers.  Continue reading FDA Warns Dietary Supplement Marketers About Deceptive Claims

The Broken Promise of American Medicine

Big pharma drugsThe FDA, the medical establishment, and big pharmaceutical companies have created an unhealthy environment for American citizens.

While the medical system seems to work well when surgery and emergency lifesaving treatment are required little focus is placed on prevention of illness or chronic disease.  Treatment focuses almost entirely upon the performance of surgery and the prescription of drugs.

The current environment created by the medical system, big pharma, and the FDA is not just skeptical of natural alternative medicine and nutritional supplements but is hostile to the concept.

Pharmaceutical companies are motivated by more and more profits.  We’re bombarded every day with outrageous advertisements, many of which include in the “fast talk” at the very end of the commercial a statement of the side effects, including fatalities.

The FDA is heavily influenced by Big Pharma.  Did you know that many FDA and “independent” drug studies are financed by the drug manufacturers themselves?  More than half the budget of the FDA division that approves new drugs is paid directly by the drug companies’ user fees.  In a new definition of the fox guarding the hen house, drug company representatives even participate in study groups and review panels.  Experts with financial ties to the drug companies dominate the FDA’s Advisory Committees and the panels that write clinical guidelines.  In this type of a system the conclusions of these studies and reiviews regarding efficacy and safety should be suspect.   Continue reading The Broken Promise of American Medicine

Natural Remedies vs. Drugs

Natural health products  are gaining popularity all the time.  People use them as preventatives to stay healthy and to achieve and maintain optimal health.

Time was when natural remedies were the only choice available.  But with the dawning of chemicals and drugs the medical profession largely abandoned natural remedies.  Procedures shifted to treating virtually all sickness and disease with pharmaceutical drugs and surgery.  Pharmaceuticals are big business, and we are subjected to a daily marketing barrage telling us to “ask your doctor about (insert some drug name here).”

The practice of modern medicine follows the “sickness” paradigm, prescribing drugs or procedures to cure people after they get sick.  This paradigm is the opposite of the “wellness” paradigm which concentrates on maintaining or getting back good health through the use of natural remedies and a healthy lifestyle.

Why are people desiring alternatives to standard medical treatments?   Continue reading Natural Remedies vs. Drugs
