Antioxidants – Are You Rusting?

Rusted up tin manThe Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz rusted up due to oxidation.  We’re suffering much worse damage due to oxidative stress, and it’ll take more than an oil can to fix it!

Oxygen is essential for life, but it can create damaging by-products during normal cellular metabolism.  These by-products are called free radicals

Although the process of oxidation is necessary, it leaves behind free radicals, oxidized molecules that are missing electrons.  These molecules are unstable and agitated.  They remain unstable until they capture new electrons to replace the missing ones.  They roam throughout our bodies stealing electrons from our cells, even our most vital ones like  electron-rich DNA.

When free radicals pull electrons out of our DNA it can no longer function properly.  DNA stores our genetic information and controls the reproduction of all new cells, including the cells of our organs, heart, brain and other tissues which are critical to our health.  Continue reading Antioxidants – Are You Rusting?

Cancer Panel Fingers Toxic Chemicals

householdchemsThis post on the link between toxic chemicals and cancer from 2010 has been updated on 9/19/2016 to include a link at the bottom to the most recent report from The President’s Cancer Panel.

In a report from the mainstream of scientific and medical thinking, the President’s Cancer Panel released a report in May, 2010 declaring that chemicals threaten our health.  This validates the concerns that many people have had about the effects of toxins on our health.

The panel is not some environmental fringe group with an agenda.  Established in 1971, the panel reports directly to the president and is comprised of 3 distinguished experts who review America’s cancer program.

In their 200 page report, the Cancer Panel recommends a much more vigorous regulation of chemicals, concluding that chemicals can have a far-reaching impact on our health.

We are exposed to toxic chemicals in the air we breathe, in the water we drink, and in the food we eat.  The proliferation of chemicals in water, air, foods, and household products is suspected as a factor in the increase in some cancers, particularly in children.  Continue reading Cancer Panel Fingers Toxic Chemicals

Can You Cure Breast Cancer By Eating Fried Chicken?

Examining breast for breast cancerIn a move that crosses the line into complete idiocy, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has hooked up with Kentucky Fried Chicken to raise money.  KFC is selling pink buckets of chicken under the slogan “Buckets for the Cure”.  Fifty cents of each purchase goes to Komen.

While finding a cure for breast cancer is certainly a worthy cause, it seems counter-intuitive to encourage unhealthy behavior to achieve it.

Fried chicken is coated in starches.  KFC’s recipe is basically flour, sugar, salt, black pepper and monosodium glutamate (MSG).  This is a recipe for chronic degenerative disease because the flour and sugar are highly processed and MSG is an excitotoxin with links to obesity, cancer and neurological disorders.  Continue reading Can You Cure Breast Cancer By Eating Fried Chicken?
